Nina Warken, 47, will become the first woman in German history to head the Chancellery. She moves from health minister to chief of the Federal Chancellery. She is considered a conservative power broker who recently pushed a controversial healthcare reform through the cabinet. Franziska Hoppermann, 44, is set to become the new CDU secretary-general – the third woman in that role after Angela Merkel and Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
Carsten Linnemann, the current secretary-general, will move to the health ministry as Warken’s successor. Philipp Amthor, until now state secretary in the digital ministry, is to coordinate cooperation with the federal states in the Chancellery. Transport minister Patrick Schnieder will hand over his post to financial expert Fritz Güntzler.
The personnel reshuffle is seen as a belated admission by the CDU leadership that the often-criticized “boy group” around Friedrich Merz needed renewal. In the future, Warken and Hoppermann will sit for the CDU in the coalition committee, the government’s most important steering body.
