Iran firmly rejects this account. The Iranian news agency Mehr quoted military officials as saying the statement was “nothing but a new lie.” The Foreign Ministry in Tehran also said no negotiations with the US are currently taking place; instead, talks are being held with Oman about a temporary solution for a safe route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian parliamentarian Hassan Ghaschghawi, spokesman for the National Security Committee, said on television, however, that “efforts are underway” to revive the agreement with the US. The main issue is the Strait of Hormuz. In mid-June, both sides agreed on a framework deal to end the war that has been ongoing since late February; key sticking points remain the waterway and Iran’s nuclear program.
