Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have concluded a trilateral defense agreement. The treaty stipulates that any attack on one of the three states will be regarded as an attack on all three allies. The agreement was reached against the backdrop of the Middle East war.
The meeting took place in the Saudi city of Mecca, where Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed the treaty, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry stressed that an attack on any of the three signatory states would be considered an attack on all. The agreement reflects the three countries’ commitment to strengthening their shared security interests, with a particular focus on enhancing collective deterrence against any aggression, Islamabad added. Details of the pact’s contents were not disclosed.
The trilateral summit was held amid mediation efforts in the war between the US and Iran. Pakistan is trying to persuade both sides to resume negotiations. According to Saudi military and government sources, the Iran war and its repercussions for the region and the world at large are a reason for forging the defense pact at this time.
