The two men are said to have connections to Russia: one is a Latvian national born in Russia, the other a man from Belarus with a Russian passport who is known to police. The investigative network of Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), NDR, and WDR reports, citing an unnamed source, that investigators are certain the two are behind the attack.
On August 4, a drone loaded with explosives was discovered in the security area of the airport between Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes. The explosive device did not detonate because the detonator failed. Another drone apparently collided with a cargo plane, and a third was later found with explosives in a field in Saxony-Anhalt.
According to information from the investigative network, one of the men is the logistics expert and instructor behind the attempted attack. The Russian-born man with a Latvian passport is said to have connections to Russian intelligence and entered the country via Berlin at the end of July. Investigators traced the second suspect through DNA evidence found on one of the drones and on a tin can filled with explosives.
The federal government officially holds Russia responsible for the attempted attack. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) spoke of so-called low-level agents, while Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) announced sanctions. Russia rejected the accusations.
