A Russian drone struck an ambulance in the Sumy region. Two paramedics were injured, their injuries are preliminarily considered light.

In the Sumy region, a Russian drone struck an ambulance and injured two paramedics. According to the news agency Ukrinform, citing the regional military administration, the attack occurred on Sunday at around 05:00 local time.

According to the report, a rescue team was on its way to a call-out in the Svesa community. On the way, the vehicle was hit by a Russian drone in the area of the Yampil community, the military administration said on Telegram. According to Ukrinform, the paramedics were able to free themselves from the damaged vehicle. Despite the danger of another attack, their colleagues were quickly on the scene and brought the team to safety.

The injured are the 44-year-old driver and a 59-year-old paramedic. According to the regional administration, both are receiving medical care; their injuries are preliminarily classified as light.

How dangerous is the situation for rescue workers?

The incident shows how risky emergency service operations remain in the border region. The Yampil community is located in the north of the Sumy region, not far from the Russian border. In the past, vehicles and emergency personnel had repeatedly been on the move there while the region was under fire.

Only on Friday, 9 October, Russian forces had shelled 19 settlements in the Sumy region and injured civilians, according to earlier reports by Ukrinform. At the beginning of October, the region’s military administration had reported that 26 settlements had been massively attacked within one day. Three people were killed and twelve others injured. According to those reports, the attackers used artillery, mortars, combat drones and guided aerial bombs; residential buildings, cars, outbuildings and social facilities were destroyed or damaged.

The Sumy region lies in the north-east of Ukraine and borders directly on Russia. Since the start of Russia’s war of aggression, it has repeatedly been the target of drone, missile and artillery attacks. Border communities such as Yampil and Svesa are particularly affected, and people have repeatedly been evacuated from them in recent months.

What does this mean for people’s everyday lives?

For the region’s residents, air raid alarms are part of everyday life. Rescue workers, firefighters and medical personnel work under constant danger. The latest attack on the ambulance is likely to reinforce concerns that even clearly civilian vehicles are not safe.

The Ukrainian government and international organisations document such incidents in order to investigate possible war crimes. The regional military administration regularly publishes overviews of attacks and casualties. An independent verification of the information is often not possible from the outside.
