The city’s Welcome Center invites newcomers to an information evening at the KVR, with tips on mobility and liability insurance. Online booking, 100 places.

If you have recently moved to Munich and are still working out which office does what, the city has an evening for you: on Tuesday 10 November, from 6 to 7.30 pm, the Welcome Center holds a welcome event for newcomers. It takes place in the hall on the ground floor of the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR), Ruppertstraße 11, close to the Theresienwiese. You need to register online; the city’s event page does not list a fee.

The invitation goes to everyone new to the city, whether they arrive from abroad or from elsewhere in Germany. For Ukrainians who moved to Munich only recently, the evening is useful because it puts several contact points under one roof.

According to the city, the programme offers information and practical tips on settling in, getting around Munich, and the services of the Welcome Center and its partners in the building. The Verbraucherzentrale Bayern explains private liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung), a question many newcomers only ask after something has gone wrong. SocialBee, a platform that links people with local help, will also present itself. The city’s Rathaus Umschau names the Mobility Department as an additional guest.

One caveat for those with limited German: the event is in German, but following the standards of “Leichte Sprache”, meaning short sentences and plain words. At A1–A2 level you can follow with some concentration; if in doubt, bring someone who can interpret. The city does not announce interpreting or Ukrainian translation for the evening.

How to sign up. The short link go.muenchen.de/willkommensveranstaltung-welcome-center leads to an online form asking for your name, e-mail, nationality and the topics you care about. The city lists 100 places; when we looked on Saturday, 82 were still free. If you book and then cannot come, please release your place.

The city intends to hold such meetings monthly, alternating between the KVR and online. For now, though, the event page lists only this one date, so if 10 November does not work, check the Welcome Center’s pages from time to time.

The Welcome Center itself is worth a visit regardless. It is open Monday and Friday 9 am–1 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9 am–1 pm and 2–5 pm, Wednesday 10 am–3 pm. Partners on site advise on German courses and integration (IBZ), recognition of foreign qualifications (Social Department), entering the job market (amiga), adult education (MVHS) and migration services. On Thursdays from 10 am to 1 pm, volunteers help for free with online appointments and applications, and the city provides PC workstations. No appointment is needed.

Our assessment: the evening will not replace individual advice, but it is a low-threshold start. Anyone who has to sort out offices, insurance and courses in the first months anyway can save themselves many separate enquiries. Whether the 100 places fill up is unclear, so it is wise not to leave signing up to the last day.
