Bavarian schoolchildren are on autumn break from Monday to Friday, and with the weekends either side that makes nine days off in a row. If you are looking for things to do in Munich that will not eat half a monthly budget, the city’s events calendar has plenty. Here is a selection with dates, venues and what we can confirm.
Gasteig HP8 in Sendling shows children’s films and hands-on programmes every afternoon at 3pm during the break: “Der kleine Prinz” on Monday 2 November, “Kurzfilme zum Mitmachen” (short films to join in with) on Tuesday, “Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen” on Wednesday, “Lotta zieht um” on Thursday and “Fritzi – Eine Wendewundergeschichte” on Friday. On Saturday 7 November “Eine Woche voller Samstage” runs at 2pm and 4pm. Tickets are sold through muenchenticket.de. According to the family portal Kindaling, the Munich city library’s “Großes Kinderkino” charges €3 for children and €4 for adults, recommended from age 6. That price does not come from the organiser, so check it before buying.
Fairy tales on stage at the Münchner Theater für Kinder
The Münchner Theater für Kinder plays almost daily. On Tuesday 3 November there is “Die kleine Zauberflöte” at 10am and “Kalif Storch” at 3pm; on Wednesday “Die kleine Hexe” at 3pm; on Thursday “Schneewittchen und die 7 Zwerge” at 10am; on Friday “Die Sterntaler” at 3pm. At the weekend: “Die Sterntaler” (Saturday 7 November, 10am), “Kalif Storch” (Saturday, 3pm), “Peter Pan” (Sunday 8 November, 10am) and “Die kleine Zauberflöte” (Sunday, 3pm). The city calendar gives neither prices nor age guidance; both appear when you book. These are familiar stories told in simple German, so they make a gentle first theatre visit for children who have only just started learning the language.
Kindaling also lists the free cultural festival “Dschungel 2026” in Sendling’s Westpark, open daily until 8 November from 2.30pm to 6pm (materials may cost extra). The source names neither an organiser nor a street address, so please verify on site or via the portal.
Worth noting now: Tollwood from 24 November
The winter Tollwood on Theresienwiese runs from 24 November to 23 December. Entry to the grounds and the “Markt der Ideen” is free, as are more than 90 per cent of the cultural events. There is a free children’s programme for roughly ages 4 to 12; the city had not yet published the details. Tickets are only needed for the three shows in the Grand Chapiteau and the New Year’s Eve party. Take the U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese. The next school break, Christmas, runs from 24 December to 8 January.
Our tip: the 3pm shows tend to fill up, so book a day or two ahead. We cannot predict how busy it will actually be.
Earlier coverage: Herbstferien in München: Was Kinder fast umsonst erleben (in German) covers free museums and activities; this piece lists the dated shows of the week.
