15 Dead on Libya’s Coast: Boat Carrying Migrants Capsizes

At least 15 bodies have washed ashore on Libya's coast, including that of a young girl. Security sources, the navy, and medics say the victims were likely passengers on a boat that capsized while trying to reach Europe.

The bodies were recovered last week at several locations near the city of Tobruk, security sources, navy personnel, and medics reported on Saturday. The corpses were heavily decomposed, two security officials said. More bodies may still be found.

According to ten survivors, around 61 people were on board the vessel, a navy representative said. The aid organization Red Crescent in Tobruk posted images on Facebook showing volunteers in white protective suits recovering the bodies along rocky stretches of coast.

Since the overthrow of Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has become a major transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty across the Mediterranean to Europe.
