Eloy Room, goalkeeper of the Curacao national team, made 15 saves in the 1-1 draw against Ecuador, achieving the second-best mark in World Cup history since data collection began. Only US goalkeeper Tim Howard saved more balls with 16 against Belgium in 2014 – but over 120 minutes. Room needed only regular time.

The 37-year-old, who had conceded seven goals in the 7-1 loss to Germany on June 14, was in a trance against Ecuador. “I’m a bit annoyed that I didn’t reach Tim Howard’s record,” Room said after the match. “But I think he was already sweating while watching because I came pretty close.”

With the draw against Ecuador, Curacao secured its first World Cup point in the federation’s history. At the same time, Germany benefited from the performance: Ecuador lost two points, the DFB team’s group win is already perfect after two matches. Curacao now has the chance to advance to the knockout stage on Thursday against Ivory Coast.
