The opening act is the Björn Lücker Berlin Ensemble with clarinet, saxophone, double bass, and drums. Also performing is the Orchestra from Hamburg St. Pauli, which, according to Tobias Reppin from the Greifswald Cultural Office, plays in a “driving” and “club-like” style. Reppin curated the program.
On the second evening, the lineup includes the Soundrise Quartet, SirBradley, and Frederik Köster with the Big Band. Köster presents his suite “Kafka on the Shore,” inspired by Haruki Murakami’s short stories. The range spans from Latin jazz to funk and free jazz.
The festival celebrates its 45th anniversary this year and is the second oldest music festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania after the Greifswald Bach Week. It originated from a student initiative before the reunification. The monastery ruins offer 500 seats, but the venue’s future is uncertain.
