Police estimated the number of participants at 6,500, while organizers from the association “Mobil ohne Auto” put it at 13,500. The cyclists started from more than 80 different locations, including Lüneburg, Buchholz, and Stade, and rode to Jungfernstieg, where a final rally took place in the afternoon.

During the departure from the Köhlbrand Bridge, four accidents occurred in which three people were injured. The cyclists fell without involvement of other participants, reported Cajus Pruin from the association’s board.

The association “Mobil ohne Auto” – an alliance of individuals, environmental groups, the General German Bicycle Club, and the North Church – demands the expansion of cycle routes and express bike lanes, a comfortable and safe Elbe crossing, and the reintroduction of car-free Sundays. The star ride traditionally takes place on the third Sunday in June.
