Algeria national team coach Vladimir Petkovic has backed goalkeeper Luca Zidane after his weak World Cup start against Argentina. “Everyone has the right to make mistakes. I am very convinced of his abilities,” the 62-year-old said. Zidane, son of football legend Zinédine Zidane, was particularly in the spotlight of criticism after the 3-0 defeat with three goals conceded from Lionel Messi.
When asked about the public criticism of Zidane, Petkovic reacted calmly. “I don’t read anything. I don’t have any social media accounts,” he said.
Before the second group match against Jordan on Tuesday (05:00, ZDF and MagentaTV), there is also uncertainty about striker Mohamed Amoura from Wolfsburg. “I can’t confirm that yet. We still have one training session and I can only say something about that tomorrow,” said Petkovic. Both teams have zero points after the first round.
