In a speech in Manchester, Andy Burnham announced the “biggest redistribution of power our country has ever seen.” He criticised centralisation in the UK and called for more powers for mayors to put control into the hands of citizens and regions.
Burnham proposed setting up a “North Street Number 10” in Manchester, tasked with reallocating powers and resources across the United Kingdom. He stressed that growth cannot be imposed from above but must be fostered from below.
Although the opposition reacted sceptically to his plans, Burnham said he would stick to the current government’s fiscal rules to avoid jeopardising the stability of public finances. The yield on ten-year British government bonds eased slightly during his speech.
