A Berlin court is set to deliver its verdict today in the trial of a doctor accused of killing 15 seriously ill patients. Meanwhile, lawmakers are debating a reform to expand police digital surveillance powers.

The Berlin Regional Court will announce its verdict on Friday in the trial of a physician. Prosecutors accuse the 40-year-old of killing 15 seriously ill patients between 2021 and 2023. The defendant confessed to the acts, stating he wanted to relieve the people of their suffering.

Parallel to the verdict, the Bundestag is debating a reform of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The plan is to expand police powers for digital surveillance – including online searches and source telecommunications monitoring. The opposition criticizes the draft law as too far-reaching.
