Bundeswehr General: Russia Could Attack NATO by 2029

The commander of the German army, Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, has warned that Russia could attack NATO territory as early as 2029 or sooner. Speaking at the ILA aerospace exhibition in Berlin, Freuding said NATO allies broadly agree that Moscow could have the capability to attack by the end of the decade, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

The commander of the German army, Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, issued a stark warning at the ILA aerospace exhibition in Berlin: Germany and NATO must prepare for a possible Russian attack by 2029 or even earlier. According to Ukrainska Pravda, Freuding said there is broad consensus among the 32 NATO allies that Russia could have the capability to attack a NATO country by the end of the decade.

“2029 is not a German forecast. These are intelligence findings coordinated within NATO,” Freuding explained. He added: “All 32 NATO allies agree that Russia could have the capability to invade a NATO country in 2029.” However, the general warned that Moscow could act sooner, despite heavy losses in its war of aggression against Ukraine, where the Ukrainian side reports over 1.3 million Russian soldiers killed or wounded, along with massive materiel losses.

Freuding stressed the urgency: “We must be ready… We must be combat-ready.” He called for faster procurement processes and interim solutions for military readiness. The remarks come as European defense officials repeatedly warn that Russia, despite its losses in Ukraine, could rebuild enough conventional military power within a few years to pose a direct threat to NATO territory.
