According to the FAZ, students discovered a camera in a women’s restroom at the HWR campus in Alt-Friedrichsfelde on Wednesday. Police called to the scene found another camera during a search of the sanitary facilities. The devices were attached with Velcro under sanitary napkin dispensers.

The university filed a criminal complaint. A police spokesperson said authorities are investigating on suspicion of violating personal privacy. The cameras are being forensically examined, including for fingerprints and DNA traces. According to the RBB, the cameras could not transmit images in real time; recordings would only have been possible by removing the devices. A police spokesperson declined to confirm this.

The district of Lichtenberg also responded: similar Velcro attachments for cameras were found in women’s restrooms in its own buildings. District Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) condemned the act as “despicable” and “disgusting.”
