In the re-run election on Sunday, 94 of 121 voters cast their ballots for Georg Klampfleuthner, equivalent to 78.3 percent of the votes cast. The ceramic master, whom many islanders call “der Hafner,” thus prevailed against the previous incumbent Armin Krämmer, who did not run again after his failure in March.
Krämmer had received only 47.7 percent of the vote in the regular local election on March 8 as the sole candidate – too little for an absolute majority. Voters instead wrote other names on the ballot papers, which Bavarian electoral law provides for when there are fewer than two candidates. A runoff with the most frequently mentioned other candidate, Michael Lanzinger, did not materialize because he did not want to run.
Klampfleuthner will henceforth govern on Fraueninsel, Herreninsel, and the uninhabited Krautinsel. With his assumption of office, he leaves the municipal council; Elisabeth Barlage, cellarer of the Frauenwörth monastery, is slated to succeed him.
