The German Children’s Charity (Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk) has called on the federal government to financially support the development of child-friendly digital games on the occasion of World Play Day. The organization stressed that digital games should be considered an integral part of children’s and youth culture and should no longer be dismissed as a low-value hobby.

According to the charity, Germany lacks targeted funding for games that are both pedagogically valuable and fun. The organization sees a gap compared to other cultural sectors such as film or music, which receive state support.

The charity’s board argued that the federal and state governments should launch a dedicated funding program for child-friendly games. This should not only boost the production of such games but also strengthen children’s media literacy.
