U.S. Donald Trump was welcomed with a lavish state banquet in Beijing on Thursday evening. During the event, he praised the “incomparably great reception” by Xi Jinping. The menu included lobster and Peking duck. Trump described his conversation with Xi as “extremely positive and productive.”

However, in his statement following the discussions, Xi issued a clear warning regarding Taiwan. He stated that U.S.-China relations could remain stable if the Taiwan issue is handled well. Otherwise, a clash could arise, putting the entire U.S.-China relationship in a dangerous position.

Xi emphasized that Taiwan’s independence is “as incompatible as fire and water.” This statement is particularly significant as China views the democratic island as part of its territory and does not rule out the use of force. The warning must be seen in the context of ongoing U.S. arms deliveries to Taiwan, which included a package worth approximately 9.5 billion euros last December.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned China in an interview with News against an attack on Taiwan, calling it a “terrible mistake.” The U.S. government’s position remains unchanged after the meeting, further escalating tensions in the region.
