Benjamin Fricke, 42, fled on his motorcycle in Peine-Vöhrum on Tuesday. The motorcycle was parked in a garage near his mother’s home. According to the Ministry of Justice, Fricke was permitted by prison authorities to perform maintenance work there – initially accompanied by a prison officer.

Around 2:30 p.m., the inmate returned to the garage to finish the work. This time, he was not accompanied. He seized the opportunity to escape. Fricke has been serving a life sentence since 2010 in Celle Prison for the murder of 23-year-old Melanie R. from Peine. The Hildesheim Regional Court also found particular severity of guilt.

The escorted leave was already the 38th – the previous 37 had passed without incident, according to the prison. The escort is not intended to prevent escape but to support the inmate. Following the public appeal, numerous tips came in from across the country, a State Criminal Police Office (LKA) spokesman told NDR. The manhunt has been expanded nationwide. The LKA warns against approaching the fugitive and asks for tips via emergency number 110.
