The Cuban government has announced further measures to open up the economy. According to Deutschlandfunk, Havana is responding to increasing pressure from the United States. Miguel Díaz-Canel, however, did not provide specific details on the planned reforms.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of the ongoing economic crisis on the Caribbean island. Cuba is suffering from a severe supply crisis, exacerbated by US sanctions and the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The government had already initiated limited reforms in recent years, such as allowing small private businesses.
