The event took place at the Southbank Centre, originally planned for the Queen Elizabeth Hall with around 900 seats, but then moved to a smaller hall. Eggers and Hornby, who have known each other for more than 25 years, spoke about Eggers’ new book, which follows the lifelong friendship between artists Cricket and Olympia from childhood.
Eggers emphasized that his main goal is to encourage people to create art. Twenty-five years ago, he founded the learning center ‘826 Valencia,’ which teaches underprivileged children the joy of writing. There are now 74 such centers worldwide. ‘Writing is the easiest art form to teach and learn,’ Eggers said, according to FAZ.
The title ‘Contrapposto’ refers to a principle in painting and sculpture where a standing figure is depicted with one leg slightly bent forward. Eggers, who studied art himself, incorporated his own life drawings into the novel. Hornby, known for ‘High Fidelity’ and ‘About a Boy,’ expressed surprise that Cricket does not become a successful artist despite his talent.
