The Ebola virus is spreading in African countries, but the exact situation is difficult to assess because healthcare and development aid have been drastically scaled back. The world is interconnected, and no one is protected from pandemics. Development policy is also security policy, because stable countries are more resilient. Despite rising wars and poverty, there are solutions, such as building efficient tax systems in developing countries. Multilateralism and investment are crucial to promoting development, peace, and stability.

In an interview with Zeit, De Croo said: “There are a lot of rumors and opinions circulating right now about what is happening and what needs to be done. But in fact, it has become very difficult to accurately assess the situation on the ground.” He added: “Healthcare has been scaled back in many villages, also because development programs have been cut more than ever before. As a result, we are no longer present there and cannot get a precise picture of the spread of the pandemic in rural areas.”
