The drone attack on the Gazprom plant in Astrakhan led to the suspension of fuel production on Thursday. According to Kyivpost, the fire was caused by debris from a downed drone that struck the facility on Wednesday. The damage to key processing units is substantial, and repairs could take weeks or months.
Regional Governor Igor Babushkin confirmed that production at a crucial gas condensate processing unit, which can produce up to 3 million tons annually, has been halted. This unit is responsible for supplying gasoline and diesel. The exact extent of the damage is still unclear; however, a source reported that equipment for processing hydrogen sulfide was also affected, complicating the plant’s restart.
The attack on the Astrakhan facility is part of a broader pattern of strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure amid the war in Ukraine. These attacks aim to destabilize the country’s energy supply and undermine military capabilities.
