East Germany once operated its own deep-sea fishing fleet with hundreds of ships and thousands of sailors. After reunification, only four of these vessels continued to sail. The documentary film “Vom Traum, unsinkbar zu sein” (Of the Dream of Being Unsinkable) by Tom Fröhlich portrays them and their crews.
The film is narrated by actor Charly Hübner, known as Rostock detective Bukow from the crime series “Polizeiruf.” With his distinctive voice, he recounts extraordinary experiences: the sailors rescued people in distress at sea, and drug smuggling is said to have occurred on the ships. “At sea, they never lost a ship,” Hübner says in the film.
