European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has announced Canada’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. The competition will take place next year in Bulgaria, after Bulgarian singer Dara won this year’s ESC with her song “Bangaranga.”

Canada is the second non-European country to compete in the ESC, following Australia. The participation is made possible by the membership of the public broadcaster CBC/Radio Canada in the EBU. The association has more than 100 members, including German broadcasters ARD and ZDF.

ZDFheute ESC expert Dominik Rzepka dismissed criticism that the decision is moving the ESC away from its roots. “It is the Eurovision Song Contest, not the European Song Contest. EU membership is not a prerequisite for participation,” he said. The ESC must constantly be reformed to reach new audiences, he added.
