The European Union (EU) imposed sanctions on three Israeli settlers and four organizations on Monday. This decision marks the first sanctions since 2024 and was made possible after Viktor Orbán was ousted from office in Hungary, where he had previously blocked all attempts at sanctions. Despite these measures, the effectiveness of the sanctions remains low, as they carry only symbolic significance.

Violence in the West Bank has surged in recent months. Radical settlers increasingly perpetrate humiliations and acts of violence against Palestinians, supported by parts of the Israeli government. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are responding harshly to the Palestinian population, resulting in numerous civilian casualties. This situation has significantly worsened the living conditions for Palestinians, who suffer from intimidation, displacement, and death.

The EU’s sanctions send a strong signal but are insufficient to effectively counter the settler violence in the West Bank. The international community faces the challenge of finding a solution to the escalating conflict as violence continues and the humanitarian situation deteriorates.
