Austria's return as host of the Eurovision Song Contest is the result of Johannes Pietsch, known as JJ, winning the competition last year. The 25-year-old brought the contest to Vienna, where now 19-year-old Cosmó has the honor of representing the country. Austria's history at the ESC is marked by ups and downs, including both successes and failures.

Udo Jürgens, who won Austria's first victory in 1966 with "Merci Chérie," is a key figure in this history. He stated in an interview: "It was an unforgettable moment that brought me international recognition." Jürgens had previously competed in 1964 and 1965 but without success. His perseverance was ultimately rewarded.

It took nearly 50 years for Austria to celebrate again after Jürgens' victory. Tom Neuwirth, better known as Conchita Wurst, won in 2014 with "Rise Like a Phoenix," receiving the maximum score from 13 countries. The performance was celebrated worldwide as a strong symbol of diversity and marked a turning point in Austria's ESC history.

However, Austria's record in the competition has not always been positive. In 2012 and 2013, the country was eliminated in the semifinals, and in 2011 it only placed 18th. Additionally, Austria has stayed away from the competition several times in the past, including in 1969 in protest against the dictatorship in Spain and from 2008 to 2010 due to criticism of the voting system.
