According to Euronews, the trial of a 34-year-old Swedish man of Iranian descent began on Monday. He worked as an IT consultant for the army from 2018 to 2022. The charge is attempted espionage for Russia.
Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist alleges that between November and December 2025, during a trip to Moscow, the defendant tried to pass classified information to the Russian intelligence services FSB and GRU. In return, he reportedly demanded protection and later Russian citizenship. The defendant denies the allegations, as his defense lawyer Hanna Lindblom emphasized.
The trial is scheduled for three days and is largely closed to the public due to the sensitivity of the information involved. The man was arrested in January; he was initially under suspicion of espionage but was charged with attempted espionage.
