The Expert Council on Climate Issues has accused the federal government of doing too little for climate protection. In a review published on Wednesday, the independent body concludes that Germany could clearly miss its self-imposed climate targets. Greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be higher than planned in the coming years.

The council, which advises the federal government, criticizes a gap between the measures adopted and the steps necessary to meet the climate targets. Without additional efforts, Germany will exceed the legally binding annual emission amounts. The report serves as a basis for the government’s future climate policy.

The federal government committed itself under the Climate Protection Act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The Expert Council sees these targets jeopardized by current policies. Environmental groups are already calling for faster action from the coalition.
