The fatal incident occurred while the woman was walking in a grazing area with her 65-year-old husband. According to police, the man was seriously injured in the attack. The exact cause of the cows’ aggressive behavior is currently unclear, a police spokesperson stated.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past, where hikers were attacked by cows. An 85-year-old man died in September 2025 after being attacked by a herd of cows in Ramsau am Dachstein. In that case, a dog was also present near the victim, which may have contributed to the animals’ aggression.
Authorities and farmers repeatedly warn about the dangers of hiking in grazing areas. Cows can react particularly aggressively when protecting their young. Therefore, it is advised to exercise special caution when hiking in such areas.
