The series centers on the highly skilled but traumatized chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, played by Jeremy Allen White. After his brother’s suicide, he tries to transform his family’s rundown sandwich shop into a gourmet restaurant. The team around talented cook Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Carmy’s friend Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) supports him in this endeavor.
The fourth season ended with a surprising decision: Carmy wants to leave the restaurant and hand it over to Sydney. She disagrees with her mentor’s departure. At the same time, the financier Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) runs into financial trouble, further heating up the plot.
The final eight episodes combine the series’ strengths: detailed kitchen action and personal fates. After the oppressive seasons three and four, the finale is noticeably more cheerful again. The crew’s attempts to creatively deal with a storm and a sudden rush of guests are both funny and moving.
