In France, dozens of so-called school supervisors have been suspended on suspicion of violence and sexual assault. These supervisors take on tasks in daycare centers and schools such as supervising children during lunch breaks or before and after school hours. According to reports, some of them are said to have abused children over a long period of time.
A mother told France Info radio what happened to her eleven-year-old daughter in 2024: The supervisor called introverted girls to him under the pretext of a secret, forced them into hugs, and tickled them under their T-shirts. The man was sentenced to a suspended prison term, had to wear an electronic ankle bracelet for six months, and is permanently banned from working in that job.
The parent initiative “SOS School Supervision” sees the root of the problem in a 2013 school reform that made the job unattractive. In addition to sexual assaults, parents also report psychological and physical violence: supervisors are said to shout at children, pull their hair, or lock them in. Hundreds of school supervisors demonstrated in Paris against blanket prejudice and for more recognition.
