A glider crashed onto the A45 between Freudenberg and Olpe-Süd on Tuesday, according to Tagesschau. One occupant was killed, another was seriously injured and had to be freed from the wreckage. No vehicles on the road were hit or damaged.

The aircraft had taken off from the nearby Hünsborn glider airfield, police said. A motorized plane had towed it into the air, but shortly after takeoff it crashed – right onto the motorway. The A45 was closed in both directions. Police diverted traffic away from the crash site; cars turned around, trucks had to wait.

Aviation safety experts are on their way to the scene to investigate the cause of the crash. The closure could last for hours. The Red Cross is distributing drinks to people stuck in the traffic jam.
