The teenager had been wanted under a European arrest warrant since the weekend. Police had set up a special commission and searched three properties in Göttingen and Gieboldehausen on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at Weender Tor near the main train station. There, a confrontation between two rival extended families escalated, with several shots fired. A police officer was hit and seriously injured. According to the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office, the officer’s condition has stabilized and he is no longer in life-threatening danger.
The altercation is said to have involved families from Kosovo who are known to the police. In Göttingen, there have been several violent conflicts between extended families recently. A murder commission has been set up to investigate. The Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office has a central unit for combating clan crime.
The case has sparked a political debate in Lower Saxony. The CDU parliamentary group requested a special session of the interior committee. Parliamentary secretary Carina Hermann demanded that the state must take decisive action against clans: “Expose networks, remove illegal weapons from circulation, dry up criminal financial flows, and confiscate illegally acquired assets.”
