The British Labour Party is under significant pressure after losing over 1,400 seats in the local elections. According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have advised Minister Keir Starmer to outline a timeline for his resignation. Starmer, who remains defiant, must now weigh his options ahead of a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
A Cabinet minister told the Guardian that there are differing opinions within the Cabinet on how to proceed. More than 70 of the approximately 400 Labour MPs have publicly withdrawn their support for Starmer, further complicating the situation. Additionally, four parliamentary assistants to ministers announced their resignations on Monday evening.
Calls for Starmer's resignation are not new, but the recent election results have dramatically escalated the situation. In the parliamentary election in Wales, traditionally a Labour stronghold, the party fell behind the independence party Plaid Cymru and Reform UK.
In a crisis speech, Starmer emphasized that he must convince the doubters. "And I will do that," he stated. However, the Minister is also receiving support from within his ranks, indicating that backing within the party is not entirely lost.
