The Green parliamentary group in the Bundestag is calling for a comprehensive federal cooling emergency program to better protect the population from extreme heat. Group leader Katharina Dröge emphasized on the sidelines of a small party conference in Sassnitz, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, that the focus is on protection in public facilities.

Dröge said: “The most important thing would be to better protect elderly people and children with air conditioning – in nursing homes, hospitals, and schools.” She proposes that the federal government launch a funding program for such solar-powered air conditioning systems, for which funds from the special assets could also be used.

Additionally, she calls for cities to be cooled down through more trees and green facades. Dröge cited the example of Paris, where such measures have been successfully implemented. She also demands that the federal government make heat protection plans mandatory for municipalities, so that people have information about cool places like libraries or subways.
