The motion, numbered 21/8378, would lift the monthly payment from the current 259 euros to 267 euros in 2027 and to 272 euros in 2028. At the same time, the tax-free allowances for children would rise to 10,056 euros and 10,236 euros respectively.
The group warns of a looming imbalance: if tax relief through child allowances stays higher than child benefit at larger incomes, the relief gap will not shrink even if both amounts rise by the same percentage. That would run counter to the coalition’s pledge to reduce the existing inequality and give families fairer relief. “More child benefit and higher child allowances do not automatically make the family support system fairer,” the group states.
The Greens therefore want the government’s tax reform bill, and any future adjustments to child benefit and child allowances, to ensure “that the gap between child benefit and the maximum tax relief does not widen again.” The allowance for care, upbringing and education needs should also be reviewed.
