Haar: Shop Owners Protest Full Closure of Leibstraße

Just days before construction begins on the renovation of Leibstraße in Haar, 48 property owners and businesspeople have handed a protest letter to Mayor Andreas Bukowski (CSU), as reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The town of Haar will begin rebuilding Leibstraße, its main shopping mile, next Monday. Until October 2028, the street will be fully closed to motor vehicle traffic. Residents accuse the town hall of informing them only at the last minute about the extent of the restrictions.

In their letter, the critics demand that the construction site be handled in “smaller sections, in phases, or half-sided.” They argue that Leibstraße is a “long-established commercial and supply street” and that the full closures threaten the existence of many shops. Bakeries, a butcher shop, a health food store, and an optician depend on regular deliveries.

Mayor Bukowski had informed residents about the process at an information event on June 10. For many, it was only then that they realized what was coming. The SPD faction in the city council supports the renovation but calls for a more tolerable design. The Trudering-Haar trade association is confident that the shops will remain accessible.
