Former Labour MP Alan Milburn has presented a government-commissioned report on youth unemployment. According to the Guardian, the study shows that six in ten NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) have never held a paid job. Milburn warned that the country faces a ‘generational fault line’.
Work and Pensions Pat McFadden introduced the report, calling it ‘really important and powerful’. Milburn himself said the NEET rate in Britain has barely fallen below ten percent in the past 25 years. ‘It is one thing not to know a problem, another to ignore it,’ Milburn said. ‘And I say sadly that the NEET crisis in our country has been swept under the carpet for far too long.’
The report finds that there is neither a system nor a plan to address the situation. Milburn stressed that every young person has something to offer and should be given the chance to learn or earn. The government had commissioned Milburn to produce the report to find solutions to rising youth unemployment.
