On Thursday, Ascension Day, Hamburg police arrested 18 men who were reportedly shouting racist slogans such as "Foreigners out." The group was found heavily intoxicated on Sandmoorweg at the western city limits. A police spokesperson stated that investigations for incitement to hatred are underway against the suspects.
The men, aged between 17 and 59, were confronted by about six police patrol cars at the scene. During the incident, they played the song "L’amour toujours" by Gigi D’Agostino, which has been misused in the past to promote racist slogans. Originally intended as an anthem to the "eternal effect" of love, the 2001 Italian hit is often used negatively in this context.
The arrests shed light on the issues of racism and incitement to hatred in society. The police have announced plans to continue their investigations to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
