A hazardous goods truck carrying organic peroxide broke down on the A8 towards Munich near Wiesensteig (Baden-Württemberg). The motorway between Mühlhausen and Hohenstadt was closed and a diversion set up. According to a police spokesman, the substance is organic peroxide. The statement about the risk of explosion comes from the Göppingen district office.
The Göppingen district office also warned of an immediate risk of forest fires given the current weather conditions. The fire brigade evacuated around 100 people from the town of Wiesensteig; they are being housed in a sports hall. Emergency services initially tried to cool the truck but abandoned the attempt.
The defective truck was manoeuvred onto a parking area in front of the Lämmerbuckeltunnel; further removal is technically impossible. A specialist company is to monitor the temperature of the hazardous material. A crisis team was set up at the fire brigade control centre, and around 250 emergency personnel are deployed.
