The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official heat warning for large parts of Germany, valid from Saturday 11 a.m. On Saturday, Saarbrücken-Burbach recorded the highest temperature nationwide at 37.5 degrees Celsius.

As early as Friday night, the DWD warned of thunderstorms in the west with heavy rain of around 20 liters per square meter in a short time, small hail, and gusty winds of up to 70 km/h. On Saturday morning, the thunderstorms are moving from the west to the center. From midday, the DWD expects more frequent thunderstorms, especially in the eastern center, with heavy rain, hailstones up to three centimeters in diameter, and hurricane-force gusts of around 100 km/h.

The severe weather has already caused damage: A lightning strike during a sports festival in Rastatt (Baden-Württemberg) injured nine people, one young woman seriously. In Moormerland (East Frisia), a tent camp with around 300 children had to be evacuated. A festival south of Flensburg with about 5,000 visitors was also evacuated, with 13 people sustaining minor injuries.
