The body of Dorje Morup has lain in the death zone of Mount Everest, at an altitude of over 8,000 meters, since 1996. Because of his green boots, he became known among climbers as ‘Green Boots’ and served as a landmark on the Tibetan side. Now the Indian government wants to have the remains recovered.

Morup was a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and died during an expedition in 1996. Three members of the group were considered missing at the time. For a long time, the identity of the deceased was speculated about, but a DNA analysis helped solve the mystery, as the media platform ‘The Better India’ reported, citing official documents.

The Indian government’s tender envisages commissioning an agency to recover the body by September. The transport of the corpse must be approved across the border via Nepal and then to India. In addition, China had blocked the ascent from the Tibetan side during the past spring season.
