Tensions between the US and Iran are running high. Following the latest US strikes, voices calling for a break in talks with Washington are growing louder. In a statement from the theological centers in Qom, the president, the Security Council, and the Iranian negotiating team are urged to immediately end negotiations in the event of another US breach of the agreement.

The statement was broadcast by state-run Irib. Despite a agreed ceasefire, mutual attacks have occurred again recently. The US struck targets in Iran after Tehran allegedly attacked ships in the Strait of Hormuz twice within a few days, according to the US.

The theological centers in Qom are among the most influential institutions of the Islamic Republic. Since the 1979 revolution led by Ruhollah Khomeini, they have been considered the ideological center of the country and wield considerable influence over political decisions.

Media outlets close to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also consider further talks with the US hardly justifiable. According to their account, the latest US strikes have already violated the first and central point of the framework agreement, which stipulates an end to hostilities. Under these conditions, they see negotiations as pointless.
