Iran’s military command announced the closure on state television. In a statement read out, it said Israel’s continued attacks in southern Lebanon violated the framework agreement with the US to end the Iran war. The command accused the US of bad faith and of failing to end the war.

The closure of the strait, through which about a fifth of the world’s crude oil is shipped in peacetime, was described as a “first step.” If the aggression continues, further steps are planned, it added.

Despite the escalation, diplomatic talks are emerging. An Iranian negotiating team will travel to Switzerland for talks with US representatives, state television quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei as saying. The trip was originally planned for Friday but was postponed after fighting in Lebanon. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed possible talks to Fox News and announced his own trip to Switzerland.
