Iran closes Strait of Hormuz

Iran's military has again declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, citing Israeli strikes in Lebanon and US policy as reasons.

State television cited Israeli strikes in Lebanon and US policy as reasons, saying they had "clearly violated their commitment" to end the war. "If the aggression continues, further steps are planned," it added.

Iran had effectively blocked the strait after the start of US-Israeli strikes in late February. In peacetime, about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil is shipped through the waterway, along with large quantities of liquefied natural gas and fertilizers. The US, in turn, blocked passage to and from Iranian ports. US Vice President JD Vance had previously told Fox News that he had no evidence Iran was closing the Strait of Hormuz and expressed confidence that “we can maintain the ceasefire.” In a memorandum of understanding signed this week, both sides pledged to lift the blockades. The first ships had already begun transiting the strait again.
