On Tuesday, Iran launched missile strikes on the Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Jordan, which hosts US troops. This action was taken in retaliation for US airstrikes conducted after the downing of a US Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports from the Revolutionary Guards, targets in Kuwait and Bahrain were also attacked.
The US military responded to the helicopter’s downing by initiating several waves of airstrikes on Iran. US Donald Trump had previously stated that the US needed to respond to the incident. The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that the attacks were completed after more than three hours of military actions and that the US was prepared to defend against “unlawful Iranian aggression.”
Iranian state media reported that the attacks on US bases in the region and the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain were carried out using drones. Kuwait and Bahrain reported airstrikes and activated their air defenses to intercept the attacks. Iranian official Abbas Araghchi stated that no attack would go unanswered.
The strikes mark an escalation of tensions in the region, which have risen since the ceasefire began in April. If the attack on the Jordanian base is confirmed, it would be the first time Iran has targeted Jordan since the conflict began.
