British pop singer Jessie J, real name Jessica Cornish, performed on the Chinese singing competition “Singer” on May 29 – just a week after she publicly announced she was cancer-free. According to the Guardian, she sang a powerful version of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and her new song “California” on the stage of the popular contest, which resembles “The Voice.” She briefly altered the lyrics to mention Changsha, the city where the show is recorded.

Jessie J had already broken through in China in 2018 when she won “Singer.” Since then, Western acts have repeatedly tried to enter the lucrative Chinese music market. The 36-year-old’s performance is seen as another sign that interest in international artists in the People’s Republic remains undiminished.

The singer had made her cancer diagnosis public last year and underwent treatment. Observers viewed her comeback on the Chinese stage as a personal triumph. The Chinese market is considered difficult but potentially very lucrative for many Western musicians – Jessie J’s success shows that it can be tapped with the right performances.
