Karl-May-Spiele in Bad Segeberg: Premiere amid Scorching Heat

More than 7,000 spectators attended the opening night of this year's Karl-May-Spiele in Bad Segeberg at the Kalkberg. According to NDR, organizers and visitors had prepared for the extreme heat.

This year’s production is titled “Im Tal des Todes” (In the Valley of Death). Even before the premiere, the management of Kalkberg GmbH had taken all precautions for the forecast heat records. “We have a carefully worked-out plan for this,” managing director Ute Thienelt told NDR.

Behind the scenes, spray gates were installed at the stage entrances and exits for the ensemble and the horses. Actress Isabel Varell, who plays the role of Roulanda, was relieved about her airy flamenco dress: “I feel sorry for my colleague Heinrich Schafmeister. He’s wearing such a thick English tweed suit. You really sweat in that.” Winnetou actor Alexander Klaws had jokingly suggested performing in swim trunks before the premiere, but then rode into the arena in his usual attire on his horse Iltschi.

The visitors arrived at the Arena with plenty of luggage. ‘We have hats, sunscreen, and lots of water with us,’ some said. ‘I also brought spare clothes for the kids in case they get completely soaked,’ others said. Small fans, hand fans, and cooling packs were also in the coolers or backpacks they brought. Despite a severe weather warning, only a few had a rain cape or umbrella. The sound system failed at some points, but otherwise there were no incidents. A total of 72 performances are planned through September 6.
